Dead Leaf Echo (Brooklyn, NY)
DLE is a Nouveau Wave voice of emotion wrapped in lyrical intrigue and swirling movement. Lines shift from point to plane as DLE plays their next show in complete electric formation. Fresh and unreleased material from their new upcoming release “Truth” out on 2&1 Records this fall.
The Sky Drops (Wilmington, DE)
The Sky Drops are gaze-grunge duo Rob Montejo and Monika Bullette. This Delaware twosome unearth a superforce of guitar, drums and vocals. “a guy and a girl who make this big noise that falls somewhere between My Bloody Valentine and the Carpenters, but with a more handcrafted sound.” -Rob Cherry
Screen Vinyl Image (Washington DC)
Screen Vinyl Image debut with a blend of electronica and psychedelia creating a sound that is fresh and intense. Swarming with heavy samples, Blade Runner era synths, and echoed guitars and vocals, the music here is ever expanding atop an array of beats ranging from the darkest moments of Suicide & The Jesus and Mary Chain to the deep grooves of early Hank Shocklee productions, dub, and Can era kraut.
Ports of Call (Philadelphia, PA)
“Philadelphia five-piece Ports of Call aren’t the first band to bathe in the tuneful shoegaze jangling of Ride, but they’ve soaked up the influences to nice effect. On “Washout”, from their self-released Like Thieves…, some wobbly guitar strums, smoldering distortion, and faraway warbles surround a measured bass line, cymbals splashing right behind them. Thomas Mosher, on guitar, and Carolynne McNeel—who plays guitars, violins and keyboards in the group– trade sweet, C86-ready nothings in duet, their whispery voices barely emerging above the din.”-Pitchfork
….Continuing the theme of shoegaze influence, Brooklyn-based Dead Leaf Echo (playing live as a five-piece) were on next with a pleasing set of mellow dream-pop songs. Recalling the sounds of Pale Saints, Slowdive, Cocteau Twins and early Lush, Dead Leaf Echo’s atmospheric songs feature shimmery and swirling guitars, breezy melodies and the gentle, melancholic vocals of lead singer/guitarist LG. The band usually performs with screen projections behind them but, likely owing to the size of the stage, the projector on this night was aimed directly at LG, making for some interesting visual effects. Dead Leaf Echo kicked off with a newer song, “Half Truth,” and the set included “Cry The Sea” and “Poison Lips” before coming to a climactic conclusion with the Ulrich Schnauss mixed “Pale Fire.” The band is set to release a third album, Truth (2&1 Records) in October.
